Torrential rain caused mudslides that took the lives of an estimated 800 people on January 12, 2011. Nearly 14,000 people have been forced to abandon their homes. In 24 hours it rained 5.67 inches, which is more than the usual rainfall for the entire month of January. The event is reported to be the worst natural disaster in Brazil’s history.

Mission Society missionaries Ben and Jenny Reyes reside in Teresopolis, Brazil, one of the hardest-hit areas. The Reyeses survived, and are working with their church to provide relief to victims in the region. They are distributing water, clothes, and food to people who have lost everything.
