Mission Society missionary battles cancer

Tim and Jennifer Goshorn and their three children were approved to serve with The Mission Society in Peru. They are currently raising support before beginning language school and ministry in South America.

Tim was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Here, he recounts the past few months and how God has worked in his life.

“Ever since we said ‘yes’ to God about following Him to Peru, the Enemy has been busy. Almost every time we have had a speaking engagement or some type of function pertaining to God’s call on our family, there have been road blocks put in our way. The most recent issue that has arisen is my diagnosis with cancer.

“I lay in bed thinking of the word ‘cancer.’ I knew that prostate cancer was a slow growing cancer, and that there are usually lots of options for those diagnosed with it. But I still kept thinking about that word. Then I said, ‘Jesus,’ and a calming peace washed over me immediately. The name ‘Jesus’ is so much bigger than the word ‘cancer.’ I know I have both in me, but I also know which is more powerful.”

Because of his young age, Tim was advised by his doctors to undergo surgery to remove the cancer instead of radiation treatment. Tim’s family and friends gathered in the waiting room the morning of the surgery and prayed.

“Less than an hour into surgery, the doctor called Jennifer into the consultation room and told her they were not going to be able to complete the surgery. They were having trouble with my air flow because of several factors. The only option left was radiation treatment.

“Jennifer returned to the waiting room and asked everyone who had gathered to start praying.

“The surgeon returned to the operating room and told the staff they were going to go ahead with the surgery anyway. Six hours later and twice the incisions as I should have had, I made it through surgery.

“A few weeks ago, I had my post-op appointment. I thanked the doctor for going ahead with the surgery even though his partners thought he should stop. He responded, ‘Jesus was in the room with me.’ He referred to the painting of the surgeon with Jesus over him, guiding the doctor’s hands. I told him many people were praying for us that day and he said, “Yes, I know,” and walked out of the room.

“I know without a doubt that the power of prayer defeated the Enemy that morning. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. We will be going to Peru with the most powerful prayer team there is!”
