The Mission Society led two international conferences during the month of February. Dr. Darrell Whiteman, vice president for mission mobilization and training and resident missiologist, and the Rev. Dr. Denny Heiberg, a Mission Society missionary and member of the Ministry Resource Team, led the events.

An International Mission Mobilization and Discipleship Consultation was held in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, February 10-14. Whiteman led sessions on ‘Crossing Cultural Barriers with the Gospel’ and Heiberg led sessions on the topic of discipleship. More than 50 Haitian pastors attended the training.

In Brazil, the Consultation took place in São Paulo, hosted by Bishop Carlos Peres and the Third Region of the Methodist Church and the Methodist University School of Theology, February 18-21. Seventy-nine pastors and church workers were joined by 31 students.

The Mission Society’s Global Outreach Seminar portion of the Consultation was taught completely by Haitians in Haiti and Brazilians in Brazil. The Global Outreach Seminar defines the essential strategies for being on mission with God. Whiteman’s teaching on “Crossing Cultural Barriers with the Gospel,” and Heiberg’s training on “Discipleship and Making Disciple Makers” complemented the Global Outreach Seminar.

Bishop João Carlos Lopes, a Mission Society board member and bishop of the sixth region of the Brazilian Methodist Church, was instrumental in Bishop Peres inviting The Mission Society to the Third Region. Bishop Lopes led sessions during the event as well.

At the end of the Consultation in Brazil, one of the participants said to Dr. Whiteman, “What you have taught this week seems like familiar territory to us, but it was done in such a different way that we received new and profound insights. How could something so simple be so profound and insightful?”

International Mission Mobilization and Discipleship Consultations are planned for Bangkok, Thailand, Shillong, India, and Francophone West Africa this year.
