Heartbreak and triumph

Judy* is a Mission Society missionary and a nurse who serves in northern India. The hospital in which she works provides medical care for 11 million people. Hear her stories of heartbreak and triumph as she cares for people and watches God work miracles.

“It is always a struggle for me to know how to share some of the horrible realities that we are surrounded by daily here, but also the way that the struggles are so often accompanied by amazing evidence of God's grace and intervention.

“I can tell you about the dozen snake bite victims traveling to our hospital on foot, motorcycle, or bus, only to die before they could make it to our doors to receive life-giving treatment. But I could also tell you of hundreds more who made it in time for treatment and were discharged rejoicing.

“I can tell you of the young man who was attacked and badly mauled by an elephant. He was innocently riding his motorcycle along a road in Nepal. Despite corporate prayer and all our doctors' efforts, he died two days later.

“But I can also tell you about another man with similar injuries from an auto accident. He was steadily worsening and not expected to live. We were praying for him. He had an amazing turn-around, testifying that Jesus physically appeared to him on what he was sure was his deathbed. This man accepted Jesus as Lord. He said his only concern had been that his children would not have the opportunity to hear the truth that their father discovered before he died. Within hours, he was sitting up (without tubes!) and excitedly sharing what had happened to him.

“I can also tell you about a young woman brought to us after delivering a live infant three hours earlier in a small medical facility several miles away. The doctor there stitched the woman up after the delivery, before sending her on to us to deliver the second child. The second baby was wedged in sideways with one little lifeless arm hanging out.

“There was really no expectation that the baby was still alive. So, trying to avoid having to do a c-section on this already traumatized mother, the baby’s arm was pushed back in and the doctor was able to grab the child’s leg and deliver her. The baby was indeed colorless, limp, and lifeless but, as a matter of routine, the doctor listened for a heartbeat...and was shocked to hear one!

“The heartbeat was faint and very slow, but it was there. Resuscitation efforts were started immediately, still with little hope for the child's survival. An hour later they had to remove the tube from the baby's throat because she was kicking and crying so hard!

“The doctor who has been covering the OB department said, ‘God knows I am completely inadequate for this task, so I tell Him, “Okay, Lord, You're the Chief and I'm the intern here. I expect You to give me directions!’ I have been watching God perform one miracle after another since I turned all my fears and inadequacies over to Him!”

“This is an overwhelming, often heartbreaking, wonderful, amazing place to work!”
