Growing a community: How you can impact this thriving South American, agricultural ministry

Centro Agritenico Metodista translates as the Methodist Agricultural Center. Larry Williams, the founder of Agrimissions, started the Centro Agritenico Metodista in Paraguay in 2002. Ten years later, the center is thriving and has impacted the community in ways no one expected.

Agrimissions is a member of The Mission Society’s Global Resource Team. Its broad function is to extend and enhance field missionaries' ability to better serve those among whom they are working. Agrimissions does this through pilot projects, national assessments, one-on-one technical assistance, providing technical publications, recruiting full-time agricultural field missionaries, organizing short-term mission trips, and sharing the gospel. The purpose of Agrimissions is to glorify God through the use of agricultural skills and talents.

Larry Williams, Christian and Angelica Dickson, and Doug and Becky Neel, all Mission Society missionaries, collaborated on the Centro Agritenico Metodista. It was created in partnership with the Evangelical Methodist Church in Paraguay. The project is located near the town of Yrubucua, about 130 miles outside of the capital city of Asuncion. It is located in a rural area where almost all of the inhabitants are farmers.

“The vision of the project was to start a small farm resource center to experiment and teach new crops and growing practices, as well as to publish manuals regarding agriculture. We wanted to do this while maintaining a relationship with the local churches and sharing Christ,” said Christian. “We had well-laid plans, but God had a different idea for the way the center was to be used.”

“Angelica began teaching cooking classes, sewing classes, and leading women’s devotionals in the center. Later we started using the facility for children’s and youth activities.”

“Today the Centro Agritenico Metodista is so much more than just a place to practice agriculture. It is an outreach of the Methodist Church in Paraguay – a place that helps the people in the community live better lives and know Christ more intimately.”

“The center has been our door to the community. It has provided the opportunity for us to serve the people in the area and work alongside them in a familiar setting. Now, one of the largest churches in the area and The Suzanna Wesley School are thriving only a few hundred meters from the center. I think the success of the church and the school is due to a greater sense of community which has been strengthened by the Centro Agritenico Metodista.”

The Mission Society is currently looking for a full-time director of the Centro Agritenico Metodista. Please contact The Mission Society’s Mobilization department if you are interested in applying for this position.
