Anne Gongwer moved to the village of Ankaase, Ghana, West Africa in 1998. With a heart for education (Anne's degree and work experience had been in teaching), she immediately saw the need for increased education and literacy training among the inhabitants of Ankaase and the surrounding villages. Since many of the children in rural areas do not always have the opportunity to attend school, the illiteracy rate was high in remote areas.

Anne began the Ankaase Literacy Program, enabling many Ghanaians of all ages to learn how to read and write in their native tongue. Ghanaian volunteers have taught more than 80 people how to read the Bible in their mother tongue language. A New Testament is presented as a gift upon completion of the course.

In 2006, Anne founded the Reading Town Library in Ankaase. It is the only library in the area and serves several schools in surrounding villages.

When thinking about her time in Ghana, Anne says, “God can take something that seems impossible or beyond our dreams, and make it a reality, due to his love, power, and infinite grace. He is always molding and shaping and putting details of a bigger picture in place. We cannot see it in front of us, but we can be sure that as we go on adventures with Him, He will amaze us.”
