Churches mobilizing churches

02.01.2011

This past October, McEachern Memorial United Methodist Church in Powder Springs, Georgia hosted their second “Beyond These Walls” mission mobilization conference for all churches in the North Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

In 2001, this metro-Atlanta church embarked on a new process of outreach and missions mobilization for their church. McEachern began by laying a solid foundation for missions through hosting a six-hour Global Outreach Workshop. They invited everyone in the church to attend. McEachern then began to implement the strategies taught in the workshop, beginning with the development of comprehensive outreach plan. As a part of that plan, a Global Impact Celebration (GIC) was held the following year. This five-day event actively involved around 200 church members (20% of their average Sunday morning worship attendance) in conducting the event. This event included opportunities for all ages to “get up close and personal” with visiting missionaries and ministries. A men’s breakfast, women’s luncheon, International banquet, and a Q&A time with a missionary panel were just a few of the high impact activities that were held during the GIC.

After hosting several annual GICs, McEachern decided to go beyond its own church walls and host a mission mobilization event for all churches in the North Georgia conference. The Mission Society was glad to be one of the sponsors of the most recent three-day “Beyond These Walls” event. Several Mission Society staff were also involved in the programming, so we were able to witness first-hand he powerful result on hundreds of people who attended the conference from scores of churches.

McEachern is a great example of what the Church Ministry team at The Mission Society believes is the highest level of church mission mobilization – when a church with a passion for mission reaches out to mobilize other churches in the same way. We get excited when we hear of stories like this, and we hope your church will as well!

Mission Society staff and board members Rev. Jorge Acevedo, Stan Self, and Dr. Darrell Whiteman taught workshops during the conference.
