Behind the scenes

Every Christian has a role to play in missions, to join God in fulfilling His purpose in the world. The Mission Society’s mission statement underscores that role: The Mission Society exists to mobilize and deploy the body of Christ globally to join Jesus in His mission, especially among the least-reached peoples. Not only does The Mission Society as an organization promote missional living, but Mission Society personnel seek to pursue that calling both through their work and their lives outside the office.

One of the ways several staff members live out that mission-minded worldview is by investing personal time in facilitating and teaching Perspectives courses in local churches. Most recently, Richard Coleman, senior director of mobilization and candidacy at The Mission Society, was invited to fly to Los Angeles, California to teach six modules of the online and DVD format Perspectives course.

Perspectives on the World Christian Movement, a ministry of Frontier Ventures, is a 15-week course touching on the biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic aspects of God’s purpose. Offered in some 200 churches each year, the Perspectives course encourages every member of the worldwide Church to assume the privilege and the responsibility of investing their lives in fulfilling the vision of Revelation, where every “nation, tribe, language and people” (NIV) together give glory to God and worship before His throne. Anyone who desires to find their place in the grand scheme of God’s movement in the world can benefit from this course taken by more than 100,000 people in the United States and 130,000 globally.

After teaching Perspectives courses for the past six years, Richard was invited to fly to Los Angeles to film new course modules for both the initial (Lesson 1) and the final (Lesson 15) lessons. A total of 24 instructors participated in filming at the Clive Davis Theater, located in the GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles. The completed 15-lesson course will be available both nationally and globally.

“This was the hardest speaking engagement I’ve ever had,” says Richard, “but well worth it.” Such teaching is an extension of the work Richard does at The Mission Society each day, helping guide and mobilize candidates to use their knowledge, gifts, and experience to live and share the gospel around the world.

From Norcross to Los Angeles, in person or on video, Richard’s vision is to see others equipped and inspired to find their unique place in God’s work in the world.
