At The Mission Society, we place a high value on equipping God’s people to be effective ministers of the gospel. Through the years we have created training experiences to better prepare our missionary community to face the challenges of cross-cultural ministry and have success in communicating the good news of Jesus to the world.
In response to a growing need for increased training for some of our new missionaries, we began a four-month intensive pilot program this year, the Atlanta Apprentice Program. In this program, seven missionaries relocated to Clarkston, Georgia – a community in the Atlanta area where thousands of international refugees are placed each year. These “apprentices” (as we called them) lived alongside refugees in apartment housing, developing friendships, sharing life, and sharing Jesus with these foreign neighbors.
Each week the apprentices also engaged in serious study and discussion of the biblical foundation for missions and mission practices with Mission Society staff members and other mission leaders from around the country. This classroom experience coupled with the practical reality of interacting daily with people of other faiths and backgrounds created a unique opportunity to learn and a ripe occasion for personal transformation.
This apprenticeship training program concluded in December and we held a special service to consecrate this time they shared. The feedback was incredible as each of the missionary participants shared testimonies of how God had moved in their lives through this experience. They told of some of the joys and sorrows they had shared in relationship with their refugee friends. They named those that they continue to pray for who are not far from the Kingdom of God.
It was evident that this experience had impacted them deeply.
What is most exciting is that this is just the beginning. From this time in Clarkston, these apprentices will be going out to different parts of the world as full-time missionaries. Because of this training, they now will go out much better prepared for cross-cultural ministry. We believe God will do great things through them as they serve others in humility and love. We can’t share their names or where they are going for security reasons as most of them will be ministering among some of the least-reached people groups on the globe!
Thank you for your prayers for these missionaries and your support for the ministry of The Mission Society. It is incredible to be partners with you as we join Jesus in His mission so that all the nations would come to know Him, love Him, and worship Him!
